More people now get answers from AI tools like ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews before they ever click a link. That changes what winning at search looks like. The goal is no longer only to rank. It's to be the source the answer is built from, and the brand that gets named and linked.
How answer engines choose sources
Most AI search tools retrieve pages from a search index, then summarise them. So the fundamentals still apply: your pages need to be crawlable, indexed and trusted. On top of that, answer engines favour content that is easy to quote: clear, specific, well structured, and consistent with what other reputable sources say.
Write answer-first content
- Put a direct, one- or two-sentence answer near the top of the page, then go deeper.
- Use descriptive headings phrased the way people ask questions.
- Include specifics an AI can cite: prices, steps, comparisons, definitions and dates.
- Keep pages up to date, and show when they were last reviewed.
Help machines understand who you are
Structured data tells search engines exactly what a page describes. Mark up your organisation, products, services, articles and FAQs with schema.org. Keep your business details consistent everywhere they appear: your website, Google Business Profile and directory listings. Consistency builds confidence that you are who you say you are.
Earn mentions, not just links
Answer engines lean on what the wider web says about you. Reviews, press coverage, podcast appearances and mentions in industry roundups all help. The same things that build a strong brand now also build AI visibility.
Measure it differently
Zero-click answers mean some visibility won't show up as traffic. In Google Analytics 4, track referrals from sources like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai, watch branded search volume, and regularly ask the AI tools your customers use about your category to see whether, and how, you're mentioned.
